The Caroline Infantry (or Caroliners) (Swedish: karoliner) is a select military expeditionary force that served the Swedish kings Charles XI and Charles XII from about 1680 to 1721.
The Caroliners were the best army of that time and took not by number, but by skill. Disciplined caroliners put into practice the latest achievements of tactical thought. The Caroliners were exclusively shock troops; they were not prepared to retreat. They rushed to the enemy ranks and fired only at close range, to kill. The furious onslaught of the caroliners broke the morale of more than one enemy army and put more than one battle formation to flight. The pronounced offensive tactics greatly contributed - thanks to their success - to the formation of a hitherto unheard-of morale of the army; at the same time, this tactic would be impossible to implement on the battlefield if the morale of the army was low. Also, the caroliners were distinguished by their religiosity and always prayed before the battle, and could also go on the attack and sing a prayer.
