A crack is an extreme defect, which is an area with completely broken interatomic bonds (crack edges) and partially broken interatomic bonds (crack tip). The interface between the banks is called the crack front. The patterns of formation and growth of cracks are studied by the branch of solid state physics - the mechanics of destruction of solid bodies.
The behavior of a crack in a structural element depends on the ability of the material to resist crack growth, the values and nature of the applied loads, the influence of the environment, and the length of the crack.
The speed of crack propagation in a material can reach 0.2–0.3 of the speed of sound propagation in this medium. For example, the highest propagation velocity is observed in diamonds, about 8 km/s.
Crack propagation, which is the destruction of interatomic bonds near the crack, is accompanied by a characteristic (however different for different materials) sound (crack - hence the name). This sound is called acoustic emission.
