Artillery is one of the three oldest branches of the military, the main strike force of the ground forces of the modern Armed Forces. Artillery has a diverse classification according to its combat mission, types of weapons systems and organizational structure. Artillery with a caliber of 105 mm and larger is capable of using chemical and biological munitions, and starting with a caliber of 152–155 mm is capable of using tactical nuclear munitions. Includes cannons, howitzers, mortars, recoilless rifles, combat vehicles, anti-tank guided missiles and rocket artillery; artillery and small arms ammunition; artillery vehicles - wheeled and tracked tractors and others; fire control devices; reconnaissance and firing equipment; all types of small arms, grenade launchers.
In addition, the name "artillery" is used to denote the type of troops, as well as the science of the device, design, production and operation of artillery weapons, their combat properties, methods of firing and combat use.
The manufacture and use of tools in former times was the specialty of a special workshop, consisting of gunsmiths (constables) and their assistants. People's rulers and cities temporarily hired them into their service and provided them with extensive privileges. Thus, the artillerymen were not soldiers at all, and the commander had only a very limited influence on them. The gun shop surrounded itself with a cloak of mystery, which was best promoted by the superstition that prevailed then, and worked only in the community of its shop assistants. This state of affairs was a very important obstacle to the use of new combat weapons.
