A monoblock chair is a piece of furniture that is an inexpensive, lightweight, stackable chair, usually white, made from a single piece of plastic. It is used everywhere and is the most common piece of furniture in the world, with hundreds of millions of units produced.
The main idea of the monoblock chair goes back to the desire shared by many designers to make a chair from a single piece of material in a simple technological design that does not require glue, screws or nails. Experimentation with this idea dates back to the 1920s - early attempts involved pressing sheet metal or bending laminated wood. After World War II, progressive designers such as Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen tried to produce affordable plastic furniture. They designed chairs with seats molded from fiberglass reinforced polyester. But their chairs had metal legs. So Eero Saarinen had to sheathe the metal pedestal of his famous tulip chair with plastic so that the chair at least seemed to be one.
