Tornado is a third-generation European combat supersonic jet aircraft with a variable sweep wing. Also referred to as MRA-75 and Panavia 200.
After the attempts of the British company British Aircraft Corporation ("BAC") to create a combat aircraft in conjunction with the Société des Avions Marcel Dassault failed, she decided to move to cooperation with Germany. At the very beginning of the 1970s, the project to create a new aircraft was launched by BAC together with specialists from the German company Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm, and with the participation of the Italian Aeritalia. The Tornado was produced by the consortium Panavia Aircraft GmbH, established in 1971, in which British Aircraft Corporation (42.5%), Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (42.5%), Aeritalia (15%) owned shares. The avionics of the aircraft was developed by the Avionica consortium (Companies: British Elliott Brothers, German Elektronik System and Italian Aeritalia).
There are two main modifications: the IDS Tornado fighter-bomber and the ADV Tornado interceptor. For a long time it was one of the main combat aircraft of European NATO countries. Widely used in a number of military conflicts. By the end of the 2010s, ADV interceptors were decommissioned everywhere.
