The armed forces of the Ottoman Empire are the armed forces of the Ottoman Empire, the history of which is considered from the moment the Ottoman Empire was formed, at the beginning of the 14th century, until the formation of the Republic of Turkey, in 1923.
Artillery was subdivided into guards and army, foot and horse, field and fortress.
There were also engineering troops, which included a miner detachment, whose tasks included the repair of fortifications.
The new military system was finally approved under Sultan Abdulmejid by decree of 1839, and later by regulations of 1843 and 1877. The ground forces were subdivided into a standing army, militia and irregular troops, auxiliary troops of vassal possessions.
In 1849, the size of the Ottoman army is estimated at 120-150 thousand people, in 1854-1868 it ranged from 100-150 thousand in peacetime to 300 thousand in wartime. By 1870, there were 210,000 recruits in active service and 490,000 in reserve. In October 1912, the strength of the Turkish army reached 350 thousand people. In 1913 it came under German control. During the First World War, the Ottoman Empire fell, and in 1923 the Republic of Turkey was proclaimed and the Turkish armed forces were formed.
