MG 17 - 7.9 mm German aircraft machine gun during the Second World War. Developed by the Rheinmetall concern in 1936 on the basis of the Swiss MG 30 light machine gun.
Developed in 1936 on the basis of the Swiss MG 30 light machine gun. Initially, the MG 30 had two ammunition options - magazine and belt. However, the Rheinmetall plant in Düsseldorf decided to produce two machine guns with different types of ammunition. MG.15 with magazine and MG.17 with tape ammunition, respectively. From 1936 to 1940, both machine guns were the main aircraft armament of the Luftwaffe.
The MG.17 was belt-fed and was intended for permanent installation as a course armament. The machine gun was equipped with a pneumatic charging mechanism and electric trigger. The possibility of double-sided supply of tape with cartridges was also added. The high rate of fire of 1100 rds / min in both versions of the machine gun was achieved due to the rational design of the protrusions of the locking sleeve with a curved profile.
The operation of the automatic machine gun MG.17 is based on the principle of a short walking barrel. The barrel bore is locked by turning the locking sleeve. The trigger mechanism allows only automatic fire. The machine gun is air-cooled.
