Messerschmitt Bf.110 - twin-engine heavy fighter in the service of the Luftwaffe during the Second World War, was later retrained as a fighter-bomber and night fighter.
In 1934, several European countries were developing a strategic fighter. In Germany, the Reichs Air Ministry (RLM) issued a specification for a twin-engine, three-seat, all-metal monoplane, air cannon-capable, bomb-carrying, general-purpose fighter.
The concept of a multi-purpose aircraft captured Göring's imagination so much that he set the deadline for design to the shortest possible time. The design task was issued to several firms. In parallel, the development of engines was going on. After reviewing the projects, three firms were allowed to build prototypes: Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, Focke-Wulf and Henschel.
The development of a strategic twin-engine fighter began at Bayerische Flugzeugwerke under the leadership of W. Messerschmitt in 1934. Three Bf.110 prototypes were built in 1935. The Bf.110V1 prototype first flew on May 12, 1936 (test pilot R. Huopitz).
