Decal (eng. decal), "decal" - a method of indirect printing of images by transferring from a paper base, as well as such an image itself. In the printing and ceramics industry, the word decal is commonly used. The inventor of the decal is the French engraver Simon Francois Ravenet (fr.)rus. Initially, the technology was as follows: paint was applied to a heated copper engraving, and an impression was made from it on special dense porous (cigarette) paper, the image obtained on paper was superimposed on a varnished product, the paint stuck to the surface, after which the paper was soaked and removed. Ravenet moved to England in 1750, where he proposed to English industrialists his invention, called the décalcuer. The first ceramic pieces with decals applied to them (decorative tiles) were made in 1756 by Sadlier & Green in Liverpool.
Decal technology was further developed after the invention of lithographic printing (1796), including multicolor printing (1837) and the paper machine (1820). This allowed us to somewhat reduce the cost of decals and significantly improve the quality and attractiveness of the images.
