"Minigun" (eng. Minigun, army index - M134, aviation index - SUU-11 and GAU-2 (container), GAU-17 (easel), naval index - Mk 25) - the name of a family of multi-barreled rapid-fire machine guns built according to the Gatling scheme.
Machine gun automation uses an external constant speed drive, the rotation of the barrel block occurs counterclockwise, loading at 5:00, firing at 12:00 and ejection of the spent cartridge case at 6:30. A full rotation of the block of barrels is equal to six shots. Cooling air due to the flow of incoming air. These design solutions were designed to solve the problem of overheating and barrel wear due to the extremely high rate of fire.
The machine gun is a downsized 20 mm M61 Vulcan air cannon for standard NATO 7.62 mm rifle ammunition, since the 20 mm cannon was intended for arming attack aircraft and was too heavy for other types of aircraft. The machine gun was developed in two basic versions: 1) container for installation on the ventral mount of multi-purpose fighters, counter-guerrilla aircraft, support aircraft for ground forces and attack helicopters, 2) easel for installation in the doors or in the ramp of airborne transport helicopters for fire cover during takeoff / landing, aviation rescue operations, etc. The first option is integrated into the weapon control system of the aircraft and is used directly by the pilot, the second option is serviced by an onboard machine gunner.
