The 7.62 mm M240 machine gun (United States Machine Gun, 7.62mm, M240) is a single machine gun, a modification of the Belgian FN MAG made in the USA. It is widely used by infantry, most often by rifle companies, and is also installed on ground vehicles, boats and helicopters.
According to the results of comparative tests conducted in 1975 with the M60 and MG42 / MG3 machine guns, the Belgian FN MAG machine gun was officially adopted in 1976 and began to enter the US Army under the name M240. During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, the unreliability of the M60 machine guns in the conditions of sand was revealed, and in early 1994 it was decided to replace the M60 and MG3 in the US Marine Corps and the 75th US Army Ranger Regiment with machine guns M240G. Later, they completely replaced the M1919, MG42, Vickers and M60 machine guns in the US armed forces.
