Jagdgeschwader 54 "Grünherz" (JG 54) (54th Fighter Squadron "Grünherz" - "Green Heart") - a squadron of Luftwaffe fighters. In the initial period, she acted in the Western European theater of the Second World War, participated in the French campaign, the Battle of Britain. In the spring of 1941, squadron units took part in the Yugoslav operation, operating from Romanian airfields. With the start of Operation Barbarossa in the summer of 1941, the squadron at full strength operated as part of the 1st Air Fleet, operating jointly with the Army Group North (at the same time it was the only fighter squadron operating in this strategic direction); based at the airfields Krasnogvardeysk and Siversky. The main units of the squadron remained on this front until the very end of the war, fighting in Courland until May 1945.
One of the most successful air aces, Walter Nowotny, served in the squadron.
In 1942, units of the squadron were transferred to the zone of operations of Army Group Center. In the summer of 1943, she partially participated in the Battle of Kursk. Around the same time, the III./JG54 group and the 4./JG54 squadron were transferred to France, and after the battles in Normandy they were included in the Reich air defense, becoming part of the JG26 squadron.
