The Italian Police is one of Italy's national police forces.
Along with the Carabinieri, the Financial Guard and the Prison Police Corps, the State Police is one of the four main national police forces in Italy. First of all, the State Police operates in the provinces and major cities, and together with its subsidiary agencies, it is also responsible for patrolling roads, railways, airports, customs, as well as some waterways and providing assistance to local police forces.
Until 1981, the police were part of the armed forces.
It is the main Italian police force for the maintenance of public security and is therefore directly under the authority of the Department of Public Security and Public Order. Interpol summarizes the main focus of these forces: "Its responsibilities include investigative and law enforcement functions, as well as the security of highways, railways and waterways"
