The Javelin is an American man-portable anti-tank missile system (ATGM). Designed to destroy armored vehicles and low-flying low-speed targets (helicopters, UAVs, landing propeller-driven aircraft). It is the first production ATGM of the third generation.
Developed since 1986. Adopted by the US Army in 1996. It was successfully used during the Iraqi and Russian-Ukrainian wars, as well as a number of other armed conflicts.
Supplied for export. The cost of one complex complete with six missiles ranges from $600,000 for the United States and allies and up to $1.4 million for export (2017).
The Javelin ATGM was developed to replace the M47 Dragon anti-tank missile system, which has been in service since 1975. In total, in the process of work, several state target programs for the development of anti-tank weapons for infantry replaced each other, the largest of which were the Tank Breaker and AAWS-M. The Javelin was developed on the basis of the TI Tank Breaker, created as part of the Tank Breaker project, and incorporated all the developments received by the development company during the work on the above projects. Contracts for R & D with three development companies on a competitive basis (with the choice of one of the three prototypes) were concluded in the summer of 1986.
