Cavalry, cavalry - a branch of the army, formerly a type of weapon in which a horse was used for combat operations or movement.
Possessing high mobility and maneuverability, combined with a swift and powerful blow, the cavalry played a decisive role in many battles. The ability to conduct independent operations in a significant separation from their troops, to overcome long distances in a short time, to suddenly appear on the flanks and behind enemy lines, to quickly deploy for battle, to move from one action to another, both on horseback and on foot, provided the cavalry with the opportunity to successfully solve various tactical and operational-strategic tasks.
medium cavalry - cavalry that in different eras had different properties. In ancient times, when detachments from nomadic peoples were used as light cavalry, light regular cavalry was classified as medium cavalry, which, on the one hand, could act as heavy cavalry against detachments of nomadic peoples, and on the other hand, served as a light wing for heavy cavalry. In the era of linear tactics, medium cavalry (for example, in France) included types of cavalry, which, thanks to weapons (pikes), could combine the capabilities of both heavy and light cavalry (Polish lancers, chevolejers).
