BTR-40 - Soviet light armored vehicle of the 1950s, due to the specific nature of its designation in the Western classification is also sometimes referred to as an armored car. It was developed in the OKB GAZ in 1947-1949 on the basis of the all-wheel drive truck GAZ-63 and became the first serial armored personnel carrier of the USSR. Developed under the influence of the experience of using US armored personnel carriers, first of all M3, delivered in the years of World War II, the BTR-40 served as a light armored personnel carrier in parallel with the heavier BTR-152 in the armament system of the USSR Armed Forces. In contrast to the last BTR-40 was used, in addition to the transportation of personnel of motorized rifle units, mainly as a multi-purpose reconnaissance, communications or commander's vehicle, as well as an artillery tractor.
