The M2 is an American 12.7 mm John Browning heavy machine gun.
The M2 was developed in 1932 from the Browning M1921, which began to be designed in the final stages of the First World War.
It was widely used in US aviation during World War II, both fighter (P-40, P-47, P-51, the record for a fighter is the installation of eight M2 machine guns on a P-47 Thunderbolt attack fighter) and bomber. In the latter case, it was used both for attacks on ground targets (when medium bombers and heavy attack aircraft were equipped with batteries of 8 barrels (the A-26 record holder could carry up to 14)), and as defensive weapons in single, twin and quad installations, turrets and turrets. The defensive armament of the B-17 "Flying Fortress" bomber consisted of 13 M2 Browning units.
In 1946, the design of the machine gun was improved (which made it possible to reduce the weight of the weapon by 675 grams).
Various modifications of this machine gun were widely used by the US Army from the 1930s to the present day, during World War II, the Korean, Vietnam, Iraq and other wars. This machine gun is in service with many NATO countries and a number of other states. It, with very few modifications, remains in use longer than any other handgun in the US. It is similar in design to the Browning M1919 machine gun.
