An-72 (according to NATO codification: Coaler-“coal”, popular nicknames: “Cheburashka”)-Soviet multi-purpose transport aircraft. Designed in OKB named after O.K. Antonov to replace the An-26 aircraft. The only double -motor jet aircraft in civil aviation.

It consists in the service of the Russian Aerospace Forces and a number of other states of the world for almost 40 years (and it has no equal in terms of the amount of tasks performed). The operation of the An-72 in various modifications continues to this day. The multi-purpose An-72 is a record holder among transport aircraft in height of the flight.

On the basis of the An-72, an An-74 multi-purpose transport aircraft was created, which differs in a slightly elongated wing, a separate workplace of the navigator, a more powerful APU TA-12, and so on, in the future the family developed into the AN-148 passenger aircraft.

The first flight of the An-72 was made on August 31, 1977. In November 1983, test pilots Marina Popovich and Sergey Maksimov on the An-72 installed world records of maximum flight height-13,410 meters, and the height of horizontal flight-12,980 meters, for aircraft of this class. In 1985, a test pilot S. Gorbik on the An-72 developed a speed of 681.8 km/h on a closed 2000 km route.
