Cartridge belt (machine-gun belt), Cartridge belt - a special tape equipped with cartridges for combat power (ammunition) of small arms, usually a machine gun, usually located in a cartridge box. It is also used to feed automatic cannons and grenade launchers.
The tape serves to connect cartridges (shells) together. With tape feed, the supply of cartridges (shells) is carried out by using the energy of the moving parts of the weapon. Ribbons are usually flexible in design, but fixed-length rigid ribbons also existed, in particular, they were used in Hotchkiss machine guns. Also in aviation machine guns, cartridge lines can be used that are not tapes (their task is to avoid twisting the tape and, thus, jamming the weapon).
