Historical reference

2S9 "Nona-S" - Soviet 120-mm divisional regiment airborne self-propelled artillery and mortar installation.

It was developed at the Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering and the Design Bureau of the Lenin Perm Machine-Building Plant based on the chassis of the BTR-D floating tracked armored personnel carrier. The leaders of the work: A. G. Novozhilov - was responsible for the complex as a whole, Yu. N. Kalashnikov - was responsible for the 2A51 gun. Self-propelled artillery gun (SAO) 2S9 Nona is designed to suppress manpower, artillery and mortar batteries, rocket launchers, armored targets, firearms, and control posts.

In the late 1950s, the Cold War began in massive numbers in the armed forces of the participating countries. In the theoretical planning of military operations with the use of weapons, military operations should be carried out using a missile-bomb strike by nuclear weapons. As of the 1950-1960s, the equipment of the airborne units of the USSR was extremely insignificant. The current situation required a serious reorganization and re-equipment of the airborne forces. In addition, the new An-8 and An-12 aircraft were sent to replace the obsolete military transport aircraft Il-12 and Il-14. New aircraft have a larger internal volume and greater carrying capacity. In order to realize the new capabilities of military transport aviation and draw up new programs of the Airborne Forces in 1964, the US Secretary of Defense issued an order to begin research work on determining the tactical and technical requirements for military equipment of the Airborne Forces. In the same year, the 3rd Central Research Institute launched the comprehensive research project “Dome”.

As a result of the R&D “Kupol”, the need was identified for providing the airborne forces with the armed forces, which would enable them to effectively carry out the tasks of combating the enemy’s air and accessible targets. This unit must be provided with high maneuverability, as well as protection from the effects of the use of weapons of mass destruction. During the research, samples of artillery equipment for equipping the airborne troops were determined. An analysis of the transport capabilities of the An-12B showed that the mass of the airborne equipment should not exceed 10 tons with the use of airborne landing gear, and the ground forces existing at that time did not meet certain requirements for the mass, neither in terms of overall dimensions nor in terms of permissible overloads during landing. One of the main works on the development of new equipment was the development of a 120-mm self-propelled mortar "Lily of the Valley" and a 122-mm self-propelled howitzer "Violet" on the BMD-1 chassis.
